Samsung “moisture detected” in charging port: what it means and how to fix it

A moisture warning on a Samsung Galaxy stops wired charging until the USB port is dry. It’s a safety feature, and in most cases it clears on its own with a little patience.

What the warning means

Samsung phones with an IP68 water-resistance rating, which covers most Galaxy models, have a moisture sensor in the USB-C port. When it detects moisture, the phone shows a warning, often with a water drop icon, and stops wired charging. Samsung describes this as a way to prevent corrosion inside the port.

The exact wording varies between models and software versions, but the meaning is the same: unplug the cable and let the port dry before charging by cable again.

Steps to dry the port

These steps are based on Samsung’s own support pages.

  • Unplug the charger from the phone.
  • Wipe the outside and the port area with a dry, soft cloth.
  • Gently shake the phone with the port facing down, around 5 to 10 times. Don’t shake it hard.
  • Leave it on a cloth in a well-ventilated spot, or near a fan.
  • Give it time. Samsung says water in the port usually evaporates within about 1 to 2 hours.
  • Once it’s fully dry, restart the phone and try charging again.
  • If the liquid wasn’t fresh water (salt water, a drink, pool water), Samsung suggests rinsing the port with fresh water and then drying it thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Charge wirelessly while you wait

The moisture warning only affects the USB port. If your Galaxy supports wireless charging, you can keep using a wireless pad while the port dries. Make sure the phone is dry first and centered on the pad.

Our Speaker Cleaner can help if the speaker also sounds muffled after a splash, but sound can’t push water out of the charging port. For the port, air and time do the work.

What to avoid

  • Don’t keep forcing a cable in while the warning is showing.
  • Don’t use a hairdryer, oven or heater. Heat can damage the battery and the seals that keep water out.
  • Don’t poke pins, toothpicks or cotton swabs into the port. You can bend the contacts or leave fibers behind.
  • Don’t shake the phone forcefully. Samsung notes that excessive force can damage the device.
  • Don’t disable the warning to get around it. It exists to protect the port.

When it’s a false alarm

Sometimes the warning appears even though the phone hasn’t been near water. Samsung lists a few common reasons:

  • High humidity or condensation, for example charging in a steamy bathroom or kitchen. Try charging in a drier room.
  • A damp cable. The moisture may be in the cable’s plug, not the phone. Try a different, dry cable.
  • A leftover cached state. If the icon stays after the port is dry, Samsung suggests clearing the cache for the USB Settings system app: Settings > Apps, tap the filter and sort icon, turn on Show system apps, then open USB Settings > Storage > Clear cache. Menu names can differ slightly between One UI versions.

When to get help

If the warning won’t go away after the port has had time to dry, you’ve tried another cable, restarted the phone and cleared the USB cache, contact Samsung support or a reputable repair shop. The same applies if the phone was submerged and you notice other problems, such as a fogged camera, screen faults, unusual heat or distorted sound. A port that stays wet or dirty can corrode, and that needs proper cleaning or repair.
